An Experimental Helicopter Wind Envelope for Ship Operations
نویسنده
چکیده
Launch and recovery helicopter wind envelope for a ship type was determined as the first step to the helicopter qualification program. Flight deck velocities data were obtained by means of a two components laser Doppler anemometer testing a 1/50 model in the wind tunnel stream. Full-scale flight deck measurements were obtained on board the ship using a sonic anemometer. Wind tunnel and full-scale measurements were compared, showing good agreement and finally, a preliminary launch and recovery helicopter wind envelope for this specific ship was built. Keywords—Flight deck flow, relative wind, ship airwake, wind envelope

Experimental Investigation of the Flow on a Simple Frigate Shape (SFS)
Helicopters operations on board ships require special procedures introducing additional limitations known as ship helicopter operational limitations (SHOLs) which are a priority for all navies. This paper presents the main results obtained from the experimental investigation of a simple frigate shape (SFS) which is a typical case of study in experimental and computational aerodynamics. The resu...
متن کاملFlight Control Design for Alleviation of Pilot Workload during Helicopter Shipboard Operations
A flight control design methodology for alleviating pilot workload during helicopter shipboard operations was developed and tested in simulation. The methodology uses modern MIMO control theory to improve gust rejection properties when operating in a turbulent ship airwake. The spectral properties of the airwake are identified using simulations and incorporated into the control synthesis proces...
متن کاملComputational fluid dynamics simulations of ship airwake
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of ship airwakes are discussed in this article. CFD is used to simulate the airwakes of landing helicopter assault (LHA) and landing platform dock-17 (LPD-17) classes of ships. The focus is on capturing the massively separated flow from sharp edges of blunt bodies, while ignoring the viscous effects. A parallel, finitevolume flow solver is used wit...
متن کاملDynamic Interface Modelling and Simulation – A Unique Challenge
This paper will outline the technical challenges of dynamic interface modelling & simulation, with a specific example of the Joint Shipboard Helicopter Integration Process (JSHIP). This program, one of the most ambitious helicopter simulation programs undertaken to date, has helped both to understand the potential of rotorcraft simulation today, and to realize the limitations of technology. The...
متن کاملHelicopter Ship Board Landing System
Relative navigation of an aircraft (fixed wing or helicopter) close to ships at sea is a unique navigation problem. Shipboard helicopter operations provide a difficult operational environment. Wind over deck and wake turbulence shed by ship super structure offer challenging and unpredictable conditions during takeoff and landing. This is especially true in the operational environment that inclu...
